About Elma Montenegro, MA, LPC
Hi, I’m Elma Montenegro MA, LPC. I have a master’s degree in counseling from UTSA.
I’m bringing a vast experience with K-12 grade children and their families with16 years of experience as a teacher and since 2015 as a school counselor. During this time, I have supported students with individual or group counseling sessions identifying signs of anxiety and/or depression and providing them with tools to live a productive and successful life, navigating school, resolving personal/interpersonal issues, enhancing social skills, setting personal/career goals, and more. Also, I have assisted families with information about community resources when needed.
My theoretical approaches include Behavioral learning and Psychosocial theory having children’s stages of development in mind. I also use EMDR as a tool. Other experiences include volunteering with local and global community assisting many children and their families with goal setting, anxiety and depression coping skills, locating spiritual and emotional support, offering parenting sessions, career counseling, trauma support due to immigration and/or other experiences, multigenerational home issues, and more.
I moved from Guatemala to Texas more than 30 years ago and I’m very familiar with immigration experiences, trauma, and limitations individuals and families face in a new country; language, culture, socioeconomic status, emotional support in their language, and other issues. I would love to sit down and listen to you. Together, we can work on strategies that will help you build the skills that will enable you to be successful in reaching your goals. It will be a privilege and an honor to walk with you in your self-improvement journey!
